Local Hospice Volunteer Receives AHHC Volunteer of the Year Award

For more than 20 years, Charles Carter has quietly gone above and beyond to bring comfort, compassion, and care to hospice patients and families across our community. Now, his extraordinary service is being recognized as he receives the AHHC Volunteer of the Year Award.

(Asheboro, NC) — Charles Carter, a volunteer with Hospice of the Piedmont and its affiliate, Hospice of Randolph, received the Volunteer of the Year Award from the Association for Home & Hospice Care of North Carolina (AHHC) in recognition of more than 20 years of extraordinary service to local hospice patients and family members.

Over the past two decades, Carter supported hundreds of patients, driving tens of thousands of miles to provide companionship, respite, and practical support. In 2025 alone, he drove 7,399 miles and made 396 visits to homes and facilities across the service area.

“Charles embodies the heart of hospice volunteering,” said Ryan Biagini, Director of Community Engagement & Education for Hospice of the Piedmont and its affiliate, Hospice of Randolph. “His faithfulness and compassion have made a lasting impact on our hospice families, and we are deeply grateful for his dedicated service.”

Carter’s service as a hospice volunteer often goes well beyond companionship. Whether reading to a patient, picking up groceries, driving patients to appointments, power washing homes, or helping a patient search for housing, he approaches every interaction with gentleness and respect.

“Charles truly goes above and beyond for our patients and caregivers,” said Donna Taylor, Randolph Volunteer Coordinator. “He is dependable, generous with his time, and always finds a way to meet people where they are.”

Carter’s recognition highlights not only his personal dedication, but also the vital role volunteers play in supporting hospice patients and family members. In addition to his role as a patient volunteer, Carter serves on the organization’s Volunteer Leadership Committee, helping guide, mentor, and support fellow volunteers.
